Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of kitab kuning in improving the quality of students at Pondok Pesantren Assalam Kedungpari Sumberwinong Jombang. The main focus of this research is to explain how kitab kuning contributes to shaping students’ personalities comprehensively in intellectual, spiritual, and social aspects. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive study type. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The research subjects include the head of the boarding school, ustaz teaching kitab kuning, and several active students.
The results show that the teaching of kitab kuning at Pondok Pesantren Assalam is carried out intensively through bandongan and sorogan methods. Students are guided to understand the content of the books deeply and apply it in daily life. The books taught, such as Ta‘limul Muta‘allim, Safinatun Najah, and Fathul Qarib, are proven effective in instilling Islamic values and shaping students’ character. Thus, kitab kuning plays a strategic role in enhancing the quality of students, not only as a source of religious knowledge but also as an instrument for moral, independence, and social development.
