Abstract

ABSTRACTION

Muhammad: Concept of Morals in QS. Al-Ahzab, 33:21 : Comparative Study between Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Al-Munīr by Wahbah Az- Zuhailī, Al Qur'an Studies Study Program, Faculty of Islamic Religion, Darul Ulum University Jombang, 11 August 2025

This study aims to analyze the interpretation of QS. al-Aḥzāb, 33:21, which raises the concept of uswah ḥasanah (good example) in the Prophet Muhammad SAW according to two great commentators, namely Ibn Katsīr and Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī. To this end, the researcher positions the concept of morality as a formal object and the verse in question as a material object. More specifically, the author uses the interpretations of the two figures as primary data sources and books on morality, as well as the Qur'an and interpretations as secondary data sources.

This study uses a qualitative approach with library research and comparative analysis to explore the moral messages in the interpretations of these two figures. Ibn Kathir emphasizes the historical and exemplary aspects in the context of warfare and the faith of the Companions, while Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī provides a normative interpretation applicable to contemporary Muslims.

This study found that despite differences in style and approach, both emphasized the importance of using the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a model for moral development. This interpretation is highly relevant in addressing the challenges of moral degradation in the modern era, particularly in holistic moral education. This study recommends integrating the Prophet Muhammad's moral values into formal and non-formal education, continually adapting to changing times.
