Abstract

This research aims to examine the concept of Fitnatul ‘Ilmi from the perspective of K.H. Thaha Muntaha Abdul Mannan in his tafsir Al-Ka<fi< Fi< Tafsi<r Su<ratil Kahfi. The main focus of this study is his interpretation, which contains important lessons about the ethics of seeking knowledge and the dangers of knowledge that is not accompanied by humility. The research employs a character-study method on an Indonesian mufassir using a thematic tafsir approach. The primary data source is the tafsir Al-Ka<fi< Fi< Tafsi<r Su<ratil Kahfi, while secondary data are obtained from various supporting literatures such as classical and modern tafsir works, Islamic studies books, and scholarly journals. Data were collected through library research and then analyzed using descriptive-analytical methods. The findings indicate that, according to K.H. Thaha Muntaha Abdul Mannan, fitnatul ‘ilmi is a form of trial that may lead a person into arrogance, self-righteousness, and deviation from the true purpose of knowledge. Through his interpretation of QS. Al-Kahfi 18:60, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing ethics and morals as the foundation of seeking knowledge, as exemplified in the story of Prophet Musa (AS). The study concludes that thematic interpretation in Indonesia remains relevant to be further explored and developed in accordance with contemporary challenges.
