Abstract
Pilgrimage activities are very popular among our society, because this nation highly values the existence and services of ancestors. Furthermore, there is a background of religious teachings related to the recommendation of pilgrimage and its benefits. In Jombang, there are several tombs of figures considered important and have made real contributions to this nation. However, there is the tomb of a figure named Sayyid Sulaiman in Mojoagung Jombang which is no less crowded with pilgrims than the tombs of figures in Tebuireng Jombang; Gus Dur and KH. Hasyim Asy'ari. Individuals who make pilgrimages certainly have memories of experiences of interaction both socially and symbolically and their own meanings to what they encounter, including pilgrims to the tomb of Sayyid Sulaiman. The method used in this study is qualitative with a phenomenological approach and the theory applied is the theory of symbolic interaction by Blumer. Data were obtained from interviews, observations, and documents. The determination of informants using a purposive technique, the number of informants in this study was 16 pilgrims. This research found that each individual pilgrim assigned different meanings to what they encountered and the activities they engaged in. The symbolic interaction of pilgrims took the form of prayer rituals involving figures interpreted as a bridge for answered prayers and communication with the deceased. This also included pilgrims' perspectives on Sayyid Sulaiman.
