Abstract

This research examines the role of theater as a tool of cultural and political resistance, as well as its function as social control in society. Theater has long been a medium of artistic expression that not only entertains but also conveys social and political criticism. In this context, theater is capable of reflecting social realities and raising current issues. Using James C. Scott's theory of resistance, this study explores his view that resistance does not always take direct or confrontational forms but can manifest in subtler and more covert ways, such as through theater performances or hidden resistance.
This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method focusing on the Ringin Conthong theater group, which actively addresses social and political themes. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with theater practitioners, observations of performances, and analysis of scripts and performance documentation. The findings show that theater can be an effective tool for conveying messages of resistance and raising critical awareness among the public. Theater performances create a space for dialogue and reflection, provoking critical thinking about ongoing social and political issues. Additionally, theater serves as a form of social control by exposing injustices and deviations occurring in society.
This study underscores the importance of theater as a medium of cultural and political resistance and its contribution to shaping public opinion and driving social change. Through exploring various dimensions of theater, this research aims to provide new insights into the potential of theater in the social and political context of Indonesia.
